Sex workers Health & Welfare

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a wide-reaching impact on all populations and on human mobility. For already marginalized groups, such as sex workers , it has seriously affected their ability to work, feed their families, and contribute towards the informal sector and national economies. In 2020, the UNFPA Regional Office for East and Southern Africa undertook a rapid assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on sex workers’ programmes in the region. The highlighted disproportionate effects of the pandemic on sex workers’ livelihoods, human rights and their right to health. COVID-19 has left many sex workers, especially migrant sex workers, struggling and/or unable to work in the same way they did before COVID-19. This has impacted their survival and ability to provide for themselves and their families.
